QUOTE OF THE DAY

“There are many great dogs and many legendary dogs in Maine, but no breed can say that it has its roots in Maine, that it actually was established as a specific and distinct breed right in Maine.”

— Fort Kent musher Jonathan Hayes at a hearing on a bill to make the Seppala Siberian Maine’s state dog.

TODAY’S TOP STORIES

These four things led Gov. Janet Mills to her clash with Donald Trump. BDN Politics editor Michael Shepherd brings a decade of covering Mills to shed light on the dust-up.

Trump’s sweeping investigations of Maine have no precedent. Three cases have been launched since Friday, when Trump and Mills had a war of words during a meeting of governors at the White House.

Federal funding cuts could hit school districts in Trump-supporting parts of the state hardest. In 2022, districts in Washington and Aroostook counties got 15 to 30 percent of their funds from the federal government, versus 10 percent in more populous coastal areas.

These storied inns are for sale around Maine. None are on the market for a lack of customers, as Maine’s lodging revenue totaled more than $2 billion in 2023 and is increasing.

Construction is set to start on the new Wabanaki Center in downtown Bangor. The center will include a stage, a commercial kitchen, a room to show Indigenous films, space for after-school youth programs and a rock climbing wall.

FROM THE OPINION PAGES

“If more leaders — Sen. Susan Collins included — had [Mills’] backbone, perhaps America would not find itself at the mercy of a man who behaves more like a monarch than a president.”

Opinion: Canadian appreciation to Janet Mills for standing up to Donald Trump

LIFE IN MAINE

These friends are bicycling their way across Maine’s frozen ponds and rivers. It’s a fun and unusual way to stay active, spend time together and explore during the winter months.

This danger to snowmobilers lurks on many of Maine’s lakes. Outdoors contributor V. Paul Reynolds gives the low-down on pressure ridges.

Here’s how to tap your own maple trees. Maple sap is at its peak when frigid nights yield to sunny, above-freezing days over the course of several days.
