A new restaurant will bring authentic Mexican street food to downtown Bangor.
Mainely Tacos Dos will open in the next couple of months at 64 Main St., where Headies Glass used to be. The storefront was gutted and completely renovated.
The new restaurant is operated by Christopher Martin, who owns the Mainely Tacos food truck in Hampden. He is originally from Arizona and wanted to bring authentic Mexican food to town.
The line-up of tacos will include carne asada, carnitas, fish and shrimp, as well as weekly specials. Burritos and burrito bowls, guacamole, multiple types of queso, ceviche and gazpacho will be featured on the menu, and all made to order. There will be a self-serve chips and salsa bar, too.
No ground beef or crunchy tacos are on the menu, Martin said.
“All the quintessential street food,” Martin said.
Mainely Tacos Dos will serve a variety of bottled Mexican beer, a few taps of local Maine beer and margaritas. It’ll also have horchata, iced tea and fountain drinks.
It’ll have semi-table service, which means people will order at the counter and their food will be brought to the table, he said.
“It’s not a place you’re gonna hang out and sit and drink all day, but you come in, grab a burrito and a margarita,” Martin said.
The tables and all the trim were handmade out of leftover pallets from the Good Shepherd Food Bank, where Martin volunteers. There’ll be space for 43 people to dine-in.
Construction is ongoing but the kitchen is getting close to completion. Martin started renovations to the space nearly a year ago, doing most of it himself with the help of a few others. It’s been a slow process with various delays, but it’ll open soon, he said.
The restaurant will start serving food through take-out and delivery apps in late April before opening for dine-in around late May, Martin said.
Hours aren’t set yet, but it’ll likely be open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. in the summer, with later nights when there are concerts at the Maine Savings Amphitheatre.
