Medicaid is our country’s single largest insurer. More than 72 million Americans benefit from its coverage. Across Maine, Medicaid provides vital coverage for more than 365,000 people, including children, seniors and those with disabilities.
As a former Maine state representative, I have witnessed the lifeline that Medicaid provides for those in need. Particularly in rural Maine, across the northern and western parts of the state, healthcare services are already stretched too thin. As lawmakers in Washington look to cut spending, they must understand the massive ramifications that big Medicaid cuts would have on ordinary American families.
These proposals include “block grants,” which are simply significant Medicaid cuts by another name. They would limit Maine’s ability to cover care for residents in need. If we disconnect states’ Medicaid funding from their residents’ actual needs, thousands of Mainers could lose their coverage. This would only exacerbate existing challenges for Maine’s low-income and rural communities.
Cutting this vital program would harm individuals and families and shift an even greater burden to already overstrained emergency services and local healthcare systems. Instead of reducing access to care, our leaders must strengthen Medicaid to create a healthier nation. Lawmakers must prioritize the needs of their constituents and protect this essential program.
