A basketball coach talks to her team.

There were only three high school girls basketball teams in the state that came into their respective regional tournaments undefeated.

Lawrence High of Fairfield, Penobscot Valley of Howland and Valley High of Bingham were all 18-0 during the regular season.

Penobscot Valley won its first Class C North tournament game and Valley also won its first tourney game in Class D South.

The Lawrence High Bulldogs won their first tournament game as well, but were upset in the next round by fourth seed Camden Hills of Rockport 64-56 at the Augusta Civic Center on Wednesday in the Class A North semifinals.

Three players scored in double figures for the Windjammers, who overcame a 28-point performance by Lawrence junior star Maddie Provost.

Junior Leah Jones poured in 18 points for the Windjammers and senior Rose Tohanczyn and sophomore Thea Laukka each had 16 points.

Senior Lilly Gray and junior Ashley Shores had 12 and 10 points, respectively, for Lawrence.

Lawrence had beaten Camden Hills 68-54 in their only regular season meeting on Jan. 22 in Fairfield.

The Windjammers jumped out to a 16-9 lead after one quarter and took a 26-20 lead into the halftime locker room.

The Windjammers expanded the lead to 44-31 by outscoring Lawrence 18-11 in the third period behind seven points apiece from Jones and Laukka.

The Bulldogs entered the game with 13 of their 19 wins being by at least 20 points. Camden Hills went 16-for-24 from the foul line in the fourth quarter to hold off the Bulldogs.

Camden Hills went 18-for-26 from the free throw line in the game while Lawrence went 9-for-11.

It was a rematch of last year’s semifinal won by Lawrence 60-45.

But third seed Cony of Augusta wound up upsetting Lawrence 54-46 in their regional championship game a year ago.

Camden Hills, 14-6, will now face third seed Hampden Academy, a 42-38 winner over No. 2 Cony, in Friday’s 6 p.m. regional championship game at the Augusta Civic Center.

The teams split regular season games with each winning at home.

Hampden Academy triumphed 43-33 on Dec. 19 with Camden Hills earning a 44-42 victory on Jan. 28.
