A venomous snake was found over the weekend in a shipment of bananas at a New Hampshire grocery store.
Employees discovered the “unwanted hitchhiker,” an ornate cat-eyed snake, in the bananas on Saturday, according to New Hampshire Fish and Game.
The snake was found at the Market Basket in Manchester, ABC affiliate WMUR reported.
The ornate cat-eyed snake is native to Ecuador. It is venomous, though its bite isn’t fatal to humans. Typically, it causes intense pain, swelling and bleeding blisters. The snake is usually calm and rarely bites.
It is a nocturnal species and is often found in marshes, swamps and lagoons. A male snake grows to about 2.5 feet long, while a female grows to about 2.8 feet long.
The hitchhiker survived its trip without injury and is being rehomed through Rainforest Reptile Shows Inc.
