Like many in Maine’s 2nd Congressional District, I am distressed by Elon Musk’s recent takeover of our government, especially because President Donald Trump has encouraged and supported Musk. Besides taking access to the Treasury databases, Musk’s intentions go farther. By destroying USAID, he is impacting the livelihoods of American farmers who sell grain to USAID for feeding starving populations. Musk is not only hurting Americans, he is also harming international communities that already suffer.
Even more disturbing has been the response from my representative to Congress, Jared Golden. Rep. Golden seems to be happy to rely on the courts to stop Musk while Trump works with Musk to strip Congress of its power to appropriate funds. Note that Musk is already calling for impeachment of the judge who has stopped the illegal Treasury takeover.
Regarding Golden, in a reply to my letters and phone calls, he stated, “Should President Trump and Elon Musk wish to take fiscal responsibility, eliminating waste, and protecting against abuse seriously, he has a willing partner in Congress. I’ll be the first to take their call.” To me, this looks like Golden will sell out Mainers and bend the knee to Musk/Trump. Perhaps he is trying to court voters who still trust Trump.
As the executive branch is taking away Congress’s power, it is time for change. I believe Maine’s 2nd District needs an independent representative who is not beholden to a party. I ask such a candidate to stand up.
