Border Patrol agents recently captured five people in northern Maine after they crossed over from Canada illegally.
The U.S. Border Patrol Houlton Sector said that agents in Van Buren caught four Indians and one Algerian. The agency said some of them trudged through the snow during frigid temperatures in light clothing and tennis shoes.
“While there is never a good time to cross into the United States illegally, a frigid morning is definitely a bad time to cross. Especially if you are not dressed for the harsh weather. Luckily, our agents were able to locate this group before this ill-advised venture turned out bad,” U.S. Border Patrol Houlton Sector said.
Agents also recently captured two Romanian nationals in Caswell after they crossed the border illegally.
No other information has been released.
In January, U.S. Border Patrol announced it was beefing up security in Houlton to curb illegal entries from Canada.
According to the U.S. Border Patrol Houlton Sector, agents have seen a 250 percent increase in illegal border crossings by vehicles from 2023 to 2024.
In response, the agency installed small concrete barriers to prevent vehicle entries along the U.S.-Canadian border.
Since implementing them, illegal crossings are down 92 percent, according to U.S. Border Patrol Houlton Sector.
