One of the Blue Hill Peninsula’s few coffee shops shut its doors over the weekend, but is expected to reopen in a new location.
In a Facebook post, WoodWind Coffee Roasters’ owners said that they are not going out of business, but rather are planning to move. A new site hasn’t been announced yet.
Mother-daughter team Penelope Wheeler and Nedra Smith opened the original shop at 165 Ellsworth Road in October 2023, according to the Weekly Packet. They announced on Saturday that the location would close the following day.
The shop, named for Wheeler’s musical background, sold coffee beans roasted by the family, hot coffee drinks, tea and pastries. They won’t continue roasting until the business has relocated, the owners said.
In January, a successful fundraising campaign raised more than $2,700 to pay off WoodWind’s coffee roasting equipment. As part of the campaign, Smith said the purchase would put them on track to roast in a new location with more options for selling wholesale.

“We are excited for what’s next as owners of the roaster, thanks to our community supporting us in achieving an early pay off, giving us total autonomy of our business model going forward,” the owners said on Facebook.
Smith and Wheeler declined to comment on their next steps.
