Why is Sen. Susan Collins traipsing to Mar-a-Lago to meet with President Donald Trump? The business of the U. S. government should be discussed in the White House or the U.S. Capitol. To do otherwise now is to reinforce the Musk/Trump messaging to the nation that the U.S. government is less important than Trump himself.
In small ways and large, I expect Collins — and any legitimate member of the U.S. Senate or House of Representatives — to do everything possible to emphasize the supremacy of the Constitution, the functions of the three branches of government and the rule of law in the U.S.
Collins’ apparent submission to the Trump/Musk form of governing — and her comfort spending time in Trump’s home — lies in stark contrast, I believe, to Sen. Angus King’s bold defense of the Constitution and the responsibilities of legislators, given last week on the floor of the U.S. Senate.
While the cost of a recall now seems pointless, I believe recalling Collins in the next election is looking more sensible by the day.
