Ed Sheeran has had the plug pulled on him while busking in India.

The star, who began his career busking in the UK, is currently in the country as part of his +-=÷x tour.

Ahead of one of his shows in Bengaluru, the singer began performing on the street with his guitar.

However, during a rendition of the 2017 hit song Shape of You, videos posted online show a police officer approaching the 33-year-old as he holds the microphone out to the crowd to sing along.

Ignoring the pleas of one man for him to stop, the officer cuts off the electricity supply to the Suffolk-based star’s equipment, cutting the concert short.

Sheeran acknowledged the incident on his social media.

“We had permission to busk btw, hence us playing in that exact spot was planned out before, it wasn’t just us randomly turning up,” he said on Instagram.

He added: “All good though. See ya at the show tonight x”.

Local Deputy Commissioner Shekar Tekkannanavar told ANI news agency: “A member among the event organisers came to meet me to seek permission for the streetside performance at Church Street.

“I refused to give permission because Church Street gets very crowded.

“That is the reason he was asked to vacate the place.”

Sheeran’s tour had stopped in the southwest Indian city, where he played two dates on Saturday and Sunday.

Sahil Kaling, a 22-year-old software engineer from Bengaluru, took a video of Sheeran performing and said he was “a bit disappointed when police stopped him”.

He added he had earlier “joked” with a friend about seeing Sheeran that day.

He said: “We decided to take a walk on Church Street and just before entering (Mahatma Gandhi) MG Road metro station we saw him get out of a car.

“We couldn’t believe we got the chance to see him performing up close. It was surreal.”
