After a “whirlwind” two months of preparations, a new store supplying artisan cheese, wine and cookware opened in downtown Bangor on Friday.
Sunbury’s, located at 86 Hammond St., opened just two months after Annie Cutler bought Bangor Wine and Cheese Company from Eric and Christine Mihan when they closed in December.
This is the latest business change in downtown Bangor. A local shop, Palomas Gifts, reopened today after moving into the space formerly occupied by Central Street Farmhouse, which closed in November.
Opening the new store is something Cutler wanted in Bangor for a long time and is similar to some of her favorite spots in other cities.
“It’s been a bit of a whirlwind from start to finish,” Cutler said. “Being able to bring that to fruition feels really good.”
She thinks about the store in thirds, with one part being a wide selection of kitchenware, from Le Creuset to cheese knives to glassware. Another third is wine and cocktail items, including non-alcoholic tonics and mocktails.
The last third is food, with a variety of meats and cheeses, as well as non-perishables like dried pasta and imported olive oil. Bread will be delivered weekly from Big Sky Bread Company in Portland and Sunbury’s will stock local coffee, including Speckled Ax.
Offering items that are good for the environment and for people is important to Cutler. Items are from family-run companies and small businesses. A lot of the products are from women-owned companies.
“There’s something for everybody and there’s a story behind every label,” Cutler said.
Inventory in the store will continue to grow and change, Cutler said. If people are looking for specific items they should stop in and talk with staff.
Sunbury’s is open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Saturday, and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.
