Snow returns to Maine on Thursday with a messy evening commute expected. A more significant snowstorm looks likely this weekend.
Wednesday will be sunny but very cold with highs in the teens to near 20 degrees. Temperatures will likely plunge to below zero on Wednesday night.
The next storm arrives anywhere from 10 a.m. to noon on Thursday.
Heavy snow will quickly take over for the afternoon hours with very messy travel expected.
Snow will likely peter out in the evening, turning to freezing drizzle or sleet with all precipitation ending around 8 p.m. to 10 p.m.
For totals, this storm looks to bring a very uniform 3 to 6 inches of snow across central and southern Maine with slightly lower amounts in the mountains and northern Maine.

After the snow, Friday will be blustery with highs in the 30s with a mix of sun and clouds and the possibility of a snow shower or two.
Saturday also looks quiet with highs in the 20s with plenty of sun.
Another storm moves in around or before midnight Saturday night. Snow will become heavy overnight, and steady snow will continue through Sunday morning. Snow will gradually taper off through Sunday afternoon.
A longer duration storm, colder temperatures and a more favorable track for snow means the weekend storm will likely bring a lot more snow than Thursday. Double digit totals may be possible in some spots. Travel will be heavily impacted on Sunday.
After the storm we get a couple days’ break early next week, but another snowstorm will be possible by mid-week.
