Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is not qualified to head up the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services for two broad reasons: He lacks scientific background. He lacks management experience.
Embedded in those two broad categories is a well documented history of anti-science, conspiracy theories, misinformation, misinterpretation of scientific studies and some downright whacky behavior suggesting some real issues of judgement. And secondly, it’s honestly a little late in the game for him to be starting a managerial internship.
We do not need to challenge what is already accepted science. There is always room for inquiry and growth but we need to move forward, we cannot afford to waste the resources to rehash what we know saves millions of people every year (think vaccines). We need to be prepared and proactive and forward thinking and we need to be able to rely on a steady hand, clear messaging, evidence-based practices, science, truth and expertise. We need this for the health of every American.
I cannot think of any reasonable scenario whereby a 71-year-old man starts his first big management job in a presidential cabinet position overseeing an agency with 13 operating divisions and around 80,000 employees. Remember, this person will serve as the principal advisor to this president on all things health. What could possibly go wrong?
