I was disappointed to see that Maine Republicans honored a Jan. 6 rioter who was home after being pardoned by President Donald Trump. Apparently, they celebrated him as “a patriot,” thereby losing all claim to the designation of “the party of law and order.”
No matter how much the Republicans cast Jan. 6, 2021, as a “love fest,” people who have their wits about them must continue to hold on to the actual facts of the day. It was an insurrection by violent people who were trying to interfere with a government function that is at the heart of our democracy. That is the process by which power is handed from one administration to another.
Joe Biden won a free and fair election, as declared by numerous courts all across the nation in a variety of areas presided over by judges, both Republican and Democrat. Many of those who tried to stop that process from happening were criminals. Either they pled guilty or were convicted in court in fair trials.
Those are the facts of the day, and there are many videos, eyewitness accounts and the lasting scars borne by more than a hundred police officers to prove it. Shame on the Republican Party in Maine.
