CALAIS — Downeast Credit Union & Insurance is proud to announce a new partnership with area schools including Calais High School, Machias High School, Mount View High School, Richmond Middle and High School, and Washington Academy.

In a new program coined “Downeast Dunkers,” participating schools will receive cash and in-kind contributions from Downeast Credit Union & Insurance throughout the 2024-25 basketball season.

“The Dunkers program was created by our talented and creative team at Downeast Credit Union and Insurance,” states Downeast Credit Union President and CEO Joseph Moses. “With five area schools participating, we have allocated over $20,000 for the initiative. Our team is proud to be aligning the credit union’s mission, vision and values into the Dunkers program as we give back to area schools.”

The Downeast Dunkers program includes an interactive fundraiser taking place at select home games for the boys and girls varsity teams. Fans have a chance to purchase balls that can be tossed into a wagon during the halftime contest for a chance to win a $100 gift card. The crowd also has a chance to win basketball T-shirts in a toss which will be coordinated by high school students.

The student-athletes are involved in the Downeast Dunkers program as every free throw the varsity players make throughout the season will add $1 to the total that Downeast CU & Insurance will pay out. Additionally, the project allows students to get involved in various roles from designing and updating fundraising tracking charts, building T-shirt launchers, and generating school pride while running the contest.

Funds from the Downeast Dunkers program are expected to help purchase new warm up jerseys for various sports teams at the schools, provide supplies for concessions, and support other school and boosters programs.

Show your community pride and school spirit by attending an upcoming game and taking part in the Downeast Dunkers ball toss. Downeast Team Members will be volunteering at games throughout the season. View the calendar of games at www.downeastcu.com/events.

Senior Vice President of Lending and Operations Tonia Lanier, adds, “I feel a tremendous sense of pride knowing that our credit union has made this investment in our local communities. It is so much more than a sponsorship; it is a way for us to support the youth in our communities. As JFK was once quoted saying, ‘Children are the world’s most valuable resource and its best hope for the future.’”
