Kelly Stafford preached unity while defending Carrie Underwood’s controversial performance at Donald Trump’s Presidential Inauguration.
Underwood, 41, sang “America the Beautiful” at the Monday, January 20 event — a cappella, no less, thanks to technical issues — which earned some backlash from certain sectors of the country singer’s fanbase.
After Stafford’s “Morning After” podcast cohost, Hank Winchester, said Americans should “put politics aside” and accept invitations to the White House no matter who is in office, Stafford echoed his sentiment.
“I’m with you,” Stafford, the wife of Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford, said on the Thursday, January 23 episode. “We have to just respect the power at hand. When they’re in there, you can’t change it. You just gotta pray that they make the right decisions for this country. You gotta support any way you can, even if you don’t like them. You just gotta do it until the next term and then we’ll bitch again.”

She added, “People are in place. It is what it is.”
When it comes to getting into political arguments, Kelly said simply, “I don’t care enough.”
“I have a sister who I love more than life,” Kelly explained. “I would do anything for her, she is one of my favorite people. She’s my favorite girl I know. She’s very passionate about the President that’s the President right now. She’ll send me things and I don’t really click on them because that changes my algorithm.”
Kelly argued that Underwood’s performance didn’t necessarily indicate any specific political leanings from the American Idol winner.
“I love that I didn’t know her stance on politics,” Kelly said. “I feel like that’s kind of amazing.”
In a statement released prior to her performance, Underwood stopped short of endorsing any politician or political party in explaining her decision to attend.

“I love our country & am honored to have been asked to sing at the Inauguration and to be a small part of this historic event,” Underwood said. “I am humbled to answer the call at a time when we must all come together in the spirit of unity and looking to the future.”
As for the rest of the Inauguration, Kelly said she only caught bits and pieces because she was traveling home from her husband’s Sunday, January 19 playoff game against the Eagles in Philadelphia — but she had her eyes on the biggest sartorial moments.
“I did see the outfits,” Kelly said. “When Melania [Trump] walked out with that hat. You know I love hats. I thought it was great.”
Kelly theorized Melania was “trying to cover her face a bit, so if anything was said you couldn’t get a reaction.”
