A New Brunswick man pleaded guilty in federal court in Bangor on Tuesday to crossing the border illegally and bringing drugs.
In September 2024, U.S. Border Patrol agents stopped Nathan Paul Curran-McQuade, 31, in the Aroostook County town of Caswell for allegedly entering the country illegally from Canada, according to court documents cited by the U.S. Department of Justice in a news release.
Caswell is the next town north of Limestone. The international border runs along its eastern edge.
Curran-McQuade was driving an ATV on a trail bordering Canada that was marked with international boundary signs, the DOJ said. Agents found that he had approximately 14 grams of methamphetamine on him and marijuana in a mason jar in his backpack.
He said he was on his way to a store in Caswell and that the drugs were for personal use, according to the DOJ.
Curran-McQuade faces up to 20 years in prison and a maximum fine of $1 million for the controlled substance charge and up to 180 days in jail and up to a $5,000 fine for crossing the border illegally.
