A Portland man allegedly stole a sailboat over the weekend, causing thousands of dollars in damage.
Jesse Drinkwater, 42, has been charged with theft by unauthorized taking or transfer, theft by unauthorized use of property, criminal trespassing, burglary of a motor vehicle and aggravated criminal mischief, according to Brad Nadeau, a spokesperson for the Portland Police Department.
The boat’s owner reported the theft about 8 a.m Sunday after discovering it was missing from the Fore Points Marina, Nadeau said Monday.
The boat was spotted offshore, and the U.S. Coast Guard boarded the vessel, where it took Drinkwater into custody and then towed the boat to the marina.
Drinkwater allegedly caused $25,000 in damage to the boat, according to Nadeau.
No additional information was immediately available.
