QUOTE OF THE DAY

“After talking to the data collectors, it appears that the area they are working in has a high number of rental properties. Tenants are less likely to let us in without the owner’s approval.”

— KRT Appraisal, the firm hired by the city of Bangor to conduct a revaluation of all properties in the city.

TODAY’S TOP STORIES

Maine’s voter ID effort includes limits on ballot drop boxes. Those limits, included by conservative backers of the referendum drive, would hit two of the state’s liberal bastions hardest.

Bangor residents aren’t allowing tax inspectors into their homes. Data collectors from KRT Appraisal started inspecting Bangor properties last month as part of the city’s first revaluation in nearly 40 years.

Pink, foamy sewage filled a sinkhole at the Bangor Mall, a city official said in court Thursday. The lawsuit now being argued came after the mall owner, Namdar Realty Group, failed to fix a broken sewer pipe.

Here are five ski-area homes for sale in western Maine. The options range from multimillion-dollar mountainside lodges to rural homes that are a quick drive from the resorts.

“Local, state and federal leaders can honor Jimmy Carter best — not just with some kind words of remembrance — but by acting a bit more like him.”

Editorial: Los Angeles needs a lot of things right now. A blame game isn’t one of them.

LIFE IN MAINE

If Donald Trump seizes Greenland, Redditors say Denmark should take Maine. The map of Maine updated with Danish place names includes “Kvaeg” (“cow”) for Bangor and “Ny Kobenhavn” (“New Copenhagen”) for Portland.

Amateur photographers pose risks to owl survival. From exposing the majestic birds to gangs of crows to scaring away their food, there are plenty of unintended consequences of getting too close.

Preparation and proper gear are keys to successful ice fishing. “Native brookies are smart and can spot any rigging that’s too obvious. Togue, on the other hand, are heavy, toothy fighters, and are sure to rip up any leader that’s too thin,” Nolan Raymond writes.
