Wicked leads the nominations for the Screen Actors Guild Awards, with five nods including recognition for pop singer Ariana Grande and British stars Cynthia Erivo and Jonathan Bailey.

Other stars from the UK in the running for awards include Ralph Fiennes, for his portrayal of a conflicted priest overseeing a papal election in Conclave, and Daniel Craig, who stars in the romance Queer – in which he plays an American living in 1950s Mexico who falls in love with a young student.

The shortlists for the awards were due to be announced at a live ceremony in Los Angeles on Wednesday. However, the event was cancelled and the nominees instead revealed online due to the “wildfires and adverse wind conditions in Los Angeles“, a spokesperson said.

Hit musical Wicked, which tells the origin story of The Wizard Of Oz witches Elphaba and Glinda, picked up a Golden Globe for cinematic and box office achievement on Sunday night.

At the Screen Actors Guild Awards (SAG), it is nominated for best cast performance, alongside A Complete Unknown, Anora, Emilia Perez and Conclave.

Erivo is nominated for best actress alsongside Demi Moore – who won her first Golden Globe on Sunday for her performance in The Substance, a body horror which confronts the harsh reality of ageing in Hollywood. Fellow Golden Globe nominees Karla Sofia Gascon, who stars in Emilia Perez, The Last Showgirl’s Pamela Anderson, and Anora newcomer Mikey Madison are also shortlisted.

Following Wicked in the SAG nominations race is the Bob Dylan drama A Complete Unknown, which is in the running for four awards – including star Timothee Chalamet for best male actor, and supporting nods for both Edward Norton and Monica Barbaro.

As well as Fiennes and Craig, Chalamet is up against Colman Domingo for Sing Sing, which tells the true story of an innocent man who finds purpose in prison through a theatre group, and The Brutalist star Adrien Brody – who has already picked up the Golden Globe for his portrayal of a Hungarian architect attempting to build a life in the US after the Second World War.

Could the Oscars follow suit?

The SAG Awards are considered one of the bellwethers for the Oscars – for which nominations will be announced next week.

The last three winners in the SAG best ensemble category – Oppenheimer, Everything Everywhere All At Once, and CODA – all went on to win best picture at the Academy Awards.

And all but one of the SAG acting winners of the last three years also went on to win the Oscar – the exception was Lily Gladstone, who was named best actress at the SAG Awards for her performance in Killers Of The Flower Moon, but it was Emma Stone who went on to win the Academy Award for Poor Things.

In the TV categories this year, Bridgerton, The Day Of The Jackal, The Diplomat, Shogun and Slow Horses compete for the best ensemble in a drama series gong.

As well as the competitive awards, Jane Fonda – who has won two Oscars, two BAFTAs, an Emmy and seven Golden Globes during her career – will be presented with the guild’s life achievement prize.

The winners of the 13 awards in film and television prizes will be revealed at a ceremony streamed on Netflix and hosted by Nobody Wants This star Kristen Bell on 23 February, following voting by the 130,000 members of the actors union SAG-Aftra.
