“Good evening and welcome to the Golden Globes, Ozempic’s biggest night.”

Host Nikki Glaser certainly wasted no time in poking fun at the A-listers.

With jokes about everything from Timothee Chalamet’s moustache and his portrayal of Bob Dylan in A Complete Unknown, to Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo‘s bizarre Wicked promo interviews, the comedian set the tone for a fun opener to Hollywood’s awards season.

“Tonight we celebrate the best of film and hold space for television,” she told the audience in her opening monologue.

And noting that the room was filled with the rich and famous, and powerful, Glaser joked: “You could really do anything. Except tell the country who to vote for.”

The “real goal of acting”, she told the audience later, is to become big enough to launch a tequila brand, “that would make stars rich enough that they never needed to act again”.

Emilia Perez and The Brutalist were the night’s big winners, with Shogun, Baby Reindeer and Hacks triumphing in the TV categories.

Here’s what everyone’s talking about after the show.

Demi Moore is not just ‘popcorn’

Best known for some of her huge hits of the 1990s, from Ghost to Indecent Proposal, Demi Moore has been in the movie business for 45 years.

Following her critically acclaimed performance in body horror The Substance, which was released last year, she has now won what she says is her first ever award – and is tipped to be nominated for an Oscar.

“Thirty years ago, I had a producer tell me that I was a ‘popcorn’ actress and at that time, I made that mean that this wasn’t something that I was allowed to have, that I could do movies that were successful, that made a lot of money, but that I couldn’t be acknowledged,” Moore, 62, said on stage.

“I bought in, and I believed that, and that corroded me over time, to the point where I thought a few years ago that maybe this was it, maybe I was complete. I’ve done what I was supposed to do.

“And as I was at kind of a low point, I had this magical, bold, courageous, out-of-the-box, absolutely bonkers script come across my desk called The Substance, and the universe told me that you’re not done.”

Moore thanked French director Coralie Fargeat along with her team and said that film was a reminder “that I do belong”.

Kieran Culkin enjoys a ‘date night’ (and a win)

Succession star Kieran Culkin picked up a supporting actor prize for his performance in A Real Pain, in which he and director Jesse Eisenberg star as mismatched cousins who tour Poland in honour of their grandmother.

“My wife and I did a shot of tequila,” said Culkin as he took to the stage.

The star, who beat the likes of Denzel Washington for Gladiator II and Guy Pearce for The Brutalist to scoop the award, said the event was the “best date night that my wife and I ever have”.

Culkin has been married to Jazz Charton for more than 10 years and the couple have two children.

“Thank you for putting up with what you call my mania… It’s not fine, it’s a lot of work,” he joked.

‘I did it all by myself’

You can always rely on Colin Farrell for a refreshing take on the acceptance speech.

“No one to thank on this one, I did it all by myself,” he joked as he collected the award for his performance as the Batman villain in The Penguin. “Just a raw, pared away performance.”

But really, he said, his success has come off “the backs of the talent of so many people through the years”. He spoke of the three hours he would spend each day having “extraordinary” prosthetics and make-up applied to make him the villain in his latest film.

“In the morning I drank black coffee, listened to 80s music, and I became a canvas for that team’s brilliance,” he said.

He finished by thanking craft services for “keeping the whole crew going”.

Sir Elton gives an eyesight update

Among the many A-list award presenters was Sir Elton John, who presented a prize alongside country and folk singer Brandi Carlile.

The British music legend’s appearance came after recent headlines about him suffering impaired vision due to an eye infection.

“It’s a very special night for me to be here because I don’t know if you know, but there’s been a lot of stories going on around about my regressive eyesight, and I just wanted to reassure everybody that it’s not as bad as it seems,” the star said.

“So I’m pleased to be here with my co-host… Rihanna.”

Timothee and Kylie were back

Social media went into overdrive following last year’s ceremony, when Timothee Chalamet and Kylie Jenner made their first public appearance.

Jenner was there once again this year, showing her support (Chalamet was nominated for best actor in a drama for his portrayal of Bob Dylan in A Complete Unknown), and the Golden Globes cameras were quick to pick up on their PDAs once again.

How did the British stars do?

There were quite a few nominees from the UK shortlisted for awards, from Ralph Fiennes in Conclave to Eddie Redmayne in The Day Of The Jackal.

Baby Reindeer creator and Scottish comedian Richard Gadd picked up the statuette for best limited TV series, while his co-star Jessica Gunning was named best female supporting actress, and writer Peter Straughan picked up the best screenplay award for Conclave.

But there were other prizes that stars missed out on.

Fiennes was beaten in the best actor (drama) category by US star Adrien Brody for The Brutalist, while Daniel Craig, Hugh Grant, Gary Oldman, Redmayne, Ewan McGregor and Jack Lowden also missed out.

British actress Kate Winslet was nominated twice, for best performance by a female actress in a limited series or TV movie for playing a dictator in The Regime, and in the best actress (drama) category for her portrayal of model turned war correspondent Elizabeth Miller in Lee.

Jodie Foster took home the TV award, for her performance in crime series True Detective: Night Country, while Brazilian actress Fernanda Torres took home the film award for I’m Still Here.

Tilda Swinton, Keira Knightley and Wicked star Erivo also lost out on individual awards – but Wicked did take home the cinematic achievement prize.
