Mohamed Salah has said he wants to go out on a high by winning a second Premier League title, as he again suggested it’s his final season at Liverpool.

Negotiations over a new contract for the Egyptian star have been going on for months without any breakthrough.

Salah, 32, told Sky Sports’ Patrick Davison he wants to achieve “something special” this year.

“The first thing that was on the list was to win the Premier League with Liverpool,” he said.

“In my interviews over the last seven or eight years, I always say [I want to win the] Champions League. But this is the first time I’m saying I really want to win the Premier League with Liverpool.”

Salah has been in imperious form, topping the league for goals (17) and assists (13) this season.

However, after Sunday’s 5-0 thrashing of West Ham, he told Sky Sports a deal to stay at Liverpool was still “far away”.

The star has already said this season would be his “last year” at the club – and asked again by Davison if he really believes that, he said: “So far, yes. It’s the last six months.

“There is no progress there. We are far away from any progress. So, we just need to wait and see.”

Salah said he was trying not to get sidetracked by the contact situation.

“The thing in my head is that if this is the last six months, what do you want to see in the future?” he told Sky Sports.

“Do you want to look back and say I was concerned or stressed about the contract? Or do you just want to say I had an unbelievable season? That’s what is in my head.

“If I ever feel distraction, I just remind myself I want to look back and say I had an unbelievable season. That’s what I want to do.”

Salah said a second Premier League title was his goal as “we didn’t celebrate the one we won in the way we wanted [due to COVID restrictions] and also, coming back here too, it’s my last year in the club so you want to do something special for the city”.

He said he believed the team – which still features key players from the successful Klopp era – needed another trophy to go down as a great side.

“I still believe the team needs a trophy. There is still half of the team left like me, Trent [Alexander-Arnold], Virgil [Van Dijk], Alisson, Robbo [Andy Robertson],” he said.

“It’s necessary for us to win another trophy before we all go.”
