A man has died after a Sunday basement fire in Portland.
The victim has been tentatively identified as 78-year-old Lester York, according to Shannon Moss, a spokesperson for the Maine Department of Public Safety.
The fire happened in the basement of a Bayview Drive residence, Moss said Monday.
When police arrived, they discovered a body inside the basement. The body has been taken to the Maine medical examiner’s office, where an autopsy will determine the cause of death.
The fire only burned contents in the basement and didn’t cause any structural damage, according to Moss.
The fire remains under investigation.
