A road featured on motoring series Top Gear has had its speed cameras chopped down.

The A4069 Black Mountain Pass is described by Visit Wales as “the Top Gear road” after Jeremy Clarkson was filmed driving it.

Dyfed-Powys Police said the speed cameras were damaged on five occasions between February and December this year.

This included damage to the solar power source, and the batteries were stolen.

The devices – between the villages of Brynamman and Llangadog in Carmarthenshire – are thought to have been damaged with power tools.

Police said the cameras were installed on the four-mile stretch of road after three people were killed and 37 injured between 2013 and 2023.

The cameras cost £250,000 to install and there have been no recorded injuries since they went up, according to police.

It is estimated it will cost a further £180,000 to fix the damage to the cameras.

Chief Inspector Gareth Morgan said: “At a time where the public purse is stretched, these senseless acts increase risk and the burden on the local authority who installed the cameras.

“While there may be a small proportion of society who think that this is acceptable, it is important to remember that these cameras were installed following deaths on this road.

“Collisions cause trauma and heartache for friends and families who have lost loved ones.

“This vandalism and theft raises the risk of another tragic incident on this road.”

Visit Wales said on its website that the road was “a favourite with car magazine test drivers, bikers and motorists” as well as “the local bobbies”.

“Slow down, enjoy the scenery, and savour one of Britain’s best roads,” the Welsh government’s tourism agency added.
