Boston Bruins and former University of Maine All-American goalie Jeremy Swayman has been selected to represent the United States in the Four Nations Faceoff Tournament to be played in Montreal and Boston in February.
And former UMaine winger John Tortorella, the head coach of the National Hockey League’s Philadelphia Flyers, will be one of the assistant coaches for Team USA under head coach Mike Sullivan of the Pittsburgh Penguins.
The tournament involves a round robin format followed by a championship game and features teams from Canada, Finland and Sweden in addition to the US.
The United States will play Finland in Montreal on Thursday night, Feb. 13; Canada in Montreal on Saturday night, Feb. 15, and Sweden in Boston on Monday, Feb. 17. All three games will be at 8 p.m.
The championship game between the two teams with the best records will be held in Boston on Thursday, Feb. 20.
All three goalies for Team USA are former Hockey East goalies with the other two being former UMass Lowell and current Winnipeg Jets goalie Connor Hellebuyck and ex-Boston University netminder Jake Oettinger, now with the Dallas Stars.
Swayman missed training camp with the Bruins because he hadn’t signed a contract.
But he eventually signed an eight-year, $66 million deal with Boston just before the season-opener.
He struggled early but has played better of late, allowing just nine goals in his last five starts with a .925 save percentage.
On the season, the 26-year-old Swayman is 8-9-2 with a 3.03 goals-against average and a .893 save percentage.
For his career, the former Hobey Baker Award finalist has an 87-42-17 record with the Bruins to go with a 2.43 GAA and a .915 save percentage.
