Students from Penobscot County will have a chance to attend Husson University tuition free.
The Bangor-based university announced on Tuesday morning a new scholarship that, in conjunction with federal, state and other aid, will allow qualified Penobscot County students to attend without having to worry about paying for tuition.
“As a university, Husson wants to ensure that capable, driven students here in Maine can afford a quality education that prepares them for the future. Enabling local students to attend Husson without incurring debt is an investment in our future, their future and the future of our local economy,” President Lynne Coy-Ogan said in a statement.
Qualified students must have at least a 3.0 high school GPA, an adjusted gross family income of less than $80,000 and live in Penobscot County, according to Husson. The scholarship will be available to students applying to begin classes in the fall of 2025.
The scholarship is made possible by a donation from Husson alumni Joseph and Suzanne Cyr, who owned Cyr Bus Lines and Cyr Northstar Tours before transferring ownership to their children. The bus company serves 13 school districts covering 25 Maine communities, as well as charter service.
“We’re pleased to be the main supporter for this incredible new opportunity for local students that will enable more young people to experience a quality Husson education like we received,” Joseph and Suzanne Cyr said in a statement.
