The Maine fire marshal’s office cannot identify the cause of a fire that destroyed part of a controversial Maine school for troubled kids.
Officials listed the cause of the Nov. 17 fire that burned a building on the former Élan School campus in Poland as undetermined.
The fire marshal’s office can’t determine what started the fire because of the extent of the damage to the building.
Former students of the Élan School have accused staff of emotionally and physically abusing them, including screaming confrontations, physical punishments and forced fighting.
The school closed in 2011, citing financial difficulties.
