BOSTON — Freshman forward Allison Schwertner led a balanced scoring attack with 21 points and senior guard Alex Giannaros added 20 more to carry Boston University to a 67-57 win over the University of Maine women’s basketball team on Thursday night.
The 6-foot-3 Schwertner dominated inside as BU shot 45 percent from the floor, holding the Black Bears to 36 percent shooting. The Terriers improved to 2-2 on the season.
Junior guard Asta Blauenfeldt led UMaine with 24 points on 9-for-11 shooting but no other Black Bear reached double figures as the team slipped to 2-3 on the season.
The Black Bears started hot, jumping out to a 21-11 lead at the end of the first quarter. But BU fought back, outscoring UMaine 38-20 over the next two quarters to take control of the game.
Maine regrouped and began clawing its way back, beginning with a 5-0 spurt to close the third to close within eight.
The deficit grew back to 11 for the Black Bears with 8:43 left in the contest.
Another triple from Blauenfeldt started a 6-0 run for the Black Bears who found themselves trailing by five with 6:09 on the clock.
However, the five point deficit would be as close as Maine would get.
Blauenfeldt posted her best effort in her short UMaine career, hitting four triples to go along with four steals and three rebounds. Olivia Rockwood added three triples for nine points while Sarah Talon also posted a nine-point night.
UMaine returns to action when it hosts Quinnipiac on Sunday at approximately 2 p.m. in the second game of a doubleheader with the UMaine men’s basketball team.
