Police in the US have arrested two teenagers after a high-speed chase ended with a stolen vehicle crashing and catching fire.

The car hit a kerb and struck a tree before bursting into flames in Colorado, after officers from Larimer County in the US state performed what is known as a precision immobilisation technique (PIT) to stop the vehicle.

At times the chase on 14 November had reached speeds of 100mph.

Police quickly got two teenagers out of the burning wreckage of the 2015 Subaru Forrester and also recovered a rifle from the car.

Michael Howell-McGlynn and Kristine Elisabeth Romero, both 19, were arrested.

The car had eluded officers, who had earlier tried to stop it in the town of Berthoud last Thursday morning.

The teenagers were taken to a local hospital after sustaining injuries in the crash.

Police said the car had been stolen in Weld County during an armed car theft.

Mugshots of the teens drew attention on the Larimer County Sheriff’s Office Facebook page, as Howell-McGlynn was pictured with the majority of his face wrapped in bandages, while Romero has two-toned hair, heavy eye makeup and a bloodied lip.

Police said Howell-McGlynn was arrested for reckless driving, obstructing a police officer and vehicular eluding resulting in injuries to another person.

Romero was arrested for conspiracy to commit a class four felony – the least serious type of felony offence – and for an outstanding warrant for assault on a police officer.

“This driver’s reckless behaviour shows a disturbing disregard for the safety of others,” Larimer County Sheriff John Feyen said.

“Our deputies will continue to protect this community and apprehend dangerous criminals who threaten lives and property in Northern Colorado.”
