Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto with rising star Violinist Lun Li

BANGOR — The Bangor Symphony Orchestra will be presenting the second concert in their Masterworks series featuring rising star violinist Lun Li performing Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto in D major on Sunday, Nov. 17 at 3 p.m. at the Collins Center for the Arts. This event is made possible through a collaboration with Young Concert Artists of New York.

During his stay in Maine, Lun Li will work with the Bangor Symphony Youth Orchestra, offering local young musicians the opportunity to work directly with a concertizing violinist. Artist’s residency activity is made possible through the Annaliese Soros Educational Residency Fund of Young Concert Artists.

“Having a rising star like Lun Li work with our young musicians shows them how their dreams can become reality,” said Musical Director and Conductor Lucas Richman. “This is an incredible opportunity for our talented young musicians.”

Before the concert, The Bangor Symphony Youth Orchestra will be providing chamber music in the lobby from 2-2:45 p.m.

Opening the concert will be Berlioz’s Béatrice et Bénédict Overture, and closing the concert will be the romantic Symphony in D minor by César Franck.

Tickets for the concert start at $18 and are available at www.bangorsymphony.org or by calling the Collins Center Box Office at 207-581-1755.

On Friday, Nov. 15, from 12:30-1 p.m. there will be a free concert to celebrate the installation of the Bangor Symphony Orchestra’s donation of a grand piano at the Wabinaki Youth Center.  Located at 16 Central Street in Bangor, the concert will feature Lun Li alongside  Lucas Richman on piano, BSO Concert Master Mitch Newman on violin, Amy Irish on piano, and the Center’s own Lauren Stevens singing a Wabinaki song.

The piano was donated by Amy Irish of the Bangor Symphony Orchestra. When the Bangor Symphony moved from the Bangor Arts Exchange, the piano was in need of a new home, and found it at the Youth Center. The Bangor Symphony will use it for concerts such as this one, but is also available for use by the Wabinaki Youth Center for their own concerts.

A native of Shanghai, violinist Lun Li won First Prize in the 2021 YCA Susan Wadsworth International Auditions, The Paul A. Fish Memorial Prize, the Buffalo Chamber Music Society Prize, and was named John French Violin Chair at YCA.

Lun has participated in the Marlboro Music Festival, the Verbier Music Festival Academy, Music@Menlo’s international program, and Music from Angelfire. Lun is a member of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center’s Bowers Program.

He has appeared at venues including Konzerthaus Berlin, Kulturpalast Dresden, Wiener Konzerthaus, Carnegie Hall, Merkin Hall, The Kennedy Center, 92Y, and the Kimmel Center. He has appeared as soloist with the Brevard Philharmonic, Aiken Symphony, Salisbury Symphony Orchestra, and the Riverside Symphony.

In 24-25 Lun will appear as soloist with the Bangor Symphony, Kennett Square Symphony, Colgate University Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra of the Spring, Meridian Symphony, and the Salina Symphony. In recital he will be presented by the Main Line Committee for the Philadelphia Orchestra, Bedford Chamber Concerts, and Arts Council of Moore County. He will make multiple appearances with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center and will appear on tour with YCA on Tour in March 2025.

Lun holds degrees from Curtis Institute of Music (BM’20) and The Juilliard School (MM’22). His mentors include Ida Kavafian, Catherine Cho, and Joseph Lin. He is currently pursuing an Artistic Diploma at The Juilliard School where he serves as teaching assistant to Catherine Cho.

Lun plays on the Stradivarius “Samazeuilh” 1735 violin, on generous loan from the Nippon Music Foundation.
