A violent and controlling rapist who forced one of his victims to sign a contact “promising certain behaviours” has been jailed for nine years.

John Allen, 28, subjected two women to campaigns of abuse which included shouting, swearing, calling them derogatory names, and threatening to harm himself.

The Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service (COPFS) said Allen “restricted one victim’s contact with her family and friends, compelled her to sign a contract promising certain behaviours and prevented her from going out”.

Allen, from Denny in Falkirk, also demanded she transfer her wages to him and controlled her finances, prevented her from wearing make-up, and made her stop using contraception.

The woman was violently assaulted on various occasions, which included Allen repeatedly stamping on her head.

During one incident, Allen entered her car without permission and demanded she drive it. He then took her mobile phone, threatened to seize the steering wheel and threatened to kill her.

Katrina Parkes, Scotland’s procurator fiscal for high court sexual offending, said: “John Allen is a dangerous individual who subjected his victims to unimaginable trauma and abuse.

“It is thanks to the bravery of these women giving evidence that this prosecution has been possible.”

Allen was in August found guilty of 10 charges following a trial at the High Court in Stirling.

His offences included multiple rapes and threatening or abusive behaviour, assault to injury, and voyeurism.

Judge Fiona Tait noted that Allen’s criminal behaviour spanned more than six years.

She told the accused that she had taken into account what his defence agent had said on his behalf, but added: “Nonetheless, these sexual and violent offences are of considerable gravity.

“They have had a substantial impact upon each of the complainers and caused significant harm. Each complainer should be commended for her courage in giving evidence.

“Accordingly, because of the gravity of the offences, a custodial sentence is the only appropriate disposal in your case.”

Allen was handed a 13-year extended sentence at the High Court in Glasgow on Tuesday, with nine years in jail and four years on licence once released back into the community.

He was also added to the sex offenders’ register indefinitely and banned from contacting his victims.

Following the court case, Detective Inspector Forbes Wilson said: “Allen is a violent individual who will now face the consequences of his despicable actions.

“I want to commend the victims for the strength they have shown throughout this investigation and trial.

“My thoughts remain with them. I hope that this sentencing brings them some comfort and helps them move forward.”
