Voters reelected Sara Luciano and Benjamin Sprague to three-year terms on the Bangor School Committee in Tuesday’s election.

Sprague received the most votes with 8,168 while Luciano came in second with 7,699 votes, according to unofficial results Wednesday morning. Dawson Nevells, a senior at Bangor High School, received 4,017 votes and didn’t earn a spot on the committee.

Luciano decided to run for a second term on the school committee because she wants to continue the strong work it has done recently, such as adding a health clinic in Bangor High School and installing a new security system at every Bangor school.

Prior to the election, Luciano told the Bangor Daily News she plans to continue serving on the negotiations committee to ensure everyone in the school department earns a fair contract.

She also said she’d encourage the school committee to consider students and families of all socioeconomic backgrounds and abilities in any decision they make.

Sprague ran for a second term on the Bangor School Committee because he believes schools are “the cornerstone of our community.”

Prior to the election, Sprague said he’d like to start a conversation with community members and the Bangor Public Health Department about whether to ban smartphones from classrooms to address concerns over how technology and social media impact students’ mental health.

Additionally, Sprague said the school department needs to consider how to address the city’s aging school buildings. This could lead to combining schools or constructing new buildings entirely.

Sprague also wants the school department to prioritize ensuring students in every school have equal access to resources and opportunities, regardless of what side of Bangor they come from.
