QUOTE OF THE DAY

“Now that people walk in and go, ‘Wow, this mall is so dead,’ they’re not likely to come back any time soon.”

— Melissa Gabriel, owner of Angel Connection, a spiritual-based gift shop that offers psychic readings and spa services located in the Bangor Mall.

TODAY’S TOP MAINE STORIES

Businesses in the Bangor Mall are struggling to stay afloat, and face relocation or complete closure if the mall doesn’t start fixing its many issues. Bangor accused the three LLCs that represent the mall owner, Namdar Realty Group, of ignoring letters detailing code violations for months before finally filing a lawsuit on Oct. 24.

On Tuesday, Mainers will vote for a new president, their congressional representative and a U.S. senator, state legislators and five referendums, as well as local races. This is what you need to know about Election Day.

Tuesday’s election will see ranked choice voting in play in this year’s presidential and congressional elections. Here’s how it will work this year.

The Bangor Daily News is closely tracking any issues with voting given the high stakes of Tuesday’s toss-up presidential election and races down the Maine ballot. You can help us to report any issues you notice.

Going into the last leg of the campaign season, both Jared Golden and Austin Theriault kept relatively low profiles. The race between the incumbent Democrat and the Aroostook Republican could decide who controls the House of Representatives come January.

In a Friday campaign stop in Maine, former President Bill Clinton said he “never saw anyone better than Trump at bragging and bashing.” Campaigning in support of Vice President Kamala Harris, Clinton listed off legislative accomplishments during President Joe Biden’s tenure and said Harris will help “younger, working families.”

In 2020, the Bangor Daily News gained the distinction of being the first U.S. newspaper to call the election for Joe Biden, after partnering with Decision Desk HQ. Drew McCoy, Decision Desk HQ’s president, spoke with the BDN to offer insight into the process it takes to call an election.

LIFE IN MAINE

Maine has steadily been losing dairy farms, as farmers cite higher labor costs, fewer available workers and lower milk prices as a major factor. But one family is hoping to buck that trend by simplifying and modernizing their farm.

Have you ever wondered where you’re most likely to have a successful deer hunt in Maine? Check out the last 10 years of harvest data — and don’t worry, we didn’t out anyone’s favorite spots.

If you’ve been preparing for the deer hunt, you’ve probably set up trail cameras to figure out what your local wildlife has been up to. And sometimes, the perfect doe or buck will show up, giving you a taste of what you could harvest in the fall. If you’re successful, don’t worry too much about parasites in your meat if you take these precautions.

The deer hunt takes more skill than just getting out into the woods and shooting at your target. You may have to be patient when tracking down your deer, relying on blood trails that may leave you second-guessing.

You never know what you might see in the Maine woods. For example, this white buck made quite the impression when it was caught on a trail camera.

When the temperatures drop and water starts freezing, critters outdoors all react a little differently. Check out these songbirds that were met with a frozen bird bath.
