Selena Gomez Laughs Off Snafu After Accidentally Bringing Up Diddy at Charity Event
Selena Gomez speaks onstage during the Second Annual Rare Impact Fund Benefit Supporting Youth Mental Health on October 24, 2024 in Los Angeles.

Selena Gomez was quick to recover from a minor slip-up while taking the stage at her Rare Impact Fund Benefit.

Gomez, 32, hosted the second annual benefit on Thursday, October 24, to raise money for organizations that focus on providing mental health services to young people. During her speech at the event, the actress called out some of the charities by name, including the Didi Hirsch Mental Health Services (DHMS), which helps to prevent suicide among young people.

“They are committed to youth mental health, from suicide prevention training in schools to their drop-in center here in L.A., and their Teen Line lifeline,” Gomez said on Thursday, according to a video obtained by TMZ. “I am very honored to be working with such incredible changemakers.”

When Gomez went to introduce DHMS’ executive director she accidentally called said “Diddy” instead of “Didi,” which is pronounced “dee-dee.” The crowd erupted into laughter at her snafu.

“I really am sorry,” Gomez told the room after recovering from the mistake.

Sean “Diddy” Combs is currently on most of Hollywood’s mind amid his ongoing legal battles. The music mogul was arrested last month in Manhattan. A 14-page indictment released after he was taken into custody accused Diddy of abusing, threatening and coercing women “to fulfill his sexual desires, protect his reputation and conceal his conduct.” He has since pleaded not guilty to multiple charges, including racketeering conspiracy, sex trafficking by force, fraud or coercion and transportation to engage in prostitution. (Multiple accusers have since filed subsequent lawsuits against the rapper. He has since denied all those allegations as well.)

Diddy is currently incarcerated at Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn without bail. His third appeal for pretrial release was denied earlier this month. His trial is set to start in May 2025.

Aside from Gomez’s brief mistake, it seems the rest of her night went off without a hitch. While talking to People on Thursday, the actress shared that trying “not to isolate” is one of the biggest tips she tries to follow when it comes to taking care of her mental health.

Selena Gomez’s Mental Health Battle in Her Own Words

When she launched Rare Beauty in September 2020, Gomez announced her goal to raise $100 million for mental health services for young people. Over $15 million has been raised so far, the brand’s website declares.

“This is probably the most important thing I do with my time, and it’s not just this event,” Gomez told People. “It’s constantly every day showing up for people. We’ve built a community with Rare, and I’m so proud of that. We hopefully have helped people feel less alone, and that’s all our goal has ever been.”
