The medical practice of a doctor accused of sexual assault is now closed.
Bangor-based Maine Functional Medicine closed this fall after the owner, Michael J. Gilmore, a now-former doctor, signed a consent agreement where he admitted there was “preponderance” of evidence for the allegation that he sexually assaulted a 23-year-old woman during an appointment.
The practice is closed, according to a voicemail message on the office’s phone line. A letter sent to patients dated Sept. 24 obtained by the Bangor Daily News said the practice must close by Oct. 31 and has coverage to help with emergency health issues until that day.
There were no signs on the doors and the building that housed Maine Functional Medicine looked empty when a BDN reporter visited Thursday afternoon.
Patients should find a new primary care provider and request their records by Dec. 31. After that date, records will be stored at the Records Management Center in Bangor, according to the letter.
Gilmore had one hearing before the Maine Board of Osteopathic Licensure and was scheduled for a second before he signed the consent agreement. The 23-year-old woman alleged Gilmore did an inappropriate physical examination and tried to sexually stimulate her during a March 11 appointment, according to the consent agreement.
The BDN does not typically name sexual assault victims without their permission.
Gilmore “strongly disputed” the allegations, saying the examination was medically necessary and within his scope of practice, the consent agreement said. He testified before the commission on July 11.
There were 21 grounds for disciplinary action related to Gilmore’s treatment of the patient and his response to the commission. His osteopathic medicine license was permanently suspended Aug. 8.
