The 1975’s Matty Healy explained why he won’t be writing new music about his “casual” relationships after dating Taylor Swift.

“I just naturally make melodically quite relatable music,” Healy, 35, said during an appearance on the “Doomscroll Podcast” on Tuesday, October 22. “So, my next record will be, hopefully, an enjoyable 1975 record, objectively. And it will be about what my records are always about — love, sex, death, communication, all the big things.”

Healy went on to describe the inspiration behind the next album produced by The 1975, which also includes George Daniel, Adam Hann and Ross MacDonald. (The band’s latest record, Being Funny in a Foreign Language, dropped in 2022. Official details have not been announced regarding album No. 6.)

“The new record is, I suppose, born from me nearly going insane and that being a kind of internet-induced insanity,” Healy said.

How Matty Healy Feels About ‘The Tortured Poets Department’ Months Later

Healy’s personal life was put under a microscope last year during his whirlwind relationship with Swift, 34. The musicians were linked in May 2023, one month after Us Weekly confirmed Swift’s split from boyfriend of six years Joe Alwyn.

Matty Healy Doesn’t Want to Write Music About His Casual Romantic Liaisons

“They’re looking to give things a second chance,” a source exclusively told Us of Healy and Swift, referring to the pair’s “brief” fling nearly 10 years prior.

Drama quickly ensued as fans questioned Swift for dating Healy, who has often sparked controversy both on and off stage. Amid his rekindled relationship with Swift, resurfaced comments from Healy’s appearance on a February 2023 episode of The Adam Friedland Show ignited outrage. Healy poked fun at Ice Spice, with the podcast’s hosts mocking Chinese and Hawaiian accents, and referenced the porn website “Ghetto Gaggers,” which features the degradation of women of color. (Healy publicly apologized to Ice Spice after the comments made headlines.)

Us confirmed in June 2023 that Healy and Swift called it quits. “They had fun together, but it was never serious,” an insider revealed at the time.

Both artists quickly moved on — Healy is currently engaged to model Gabbriette Bechtel while Swift is dating NFL star Travis Kelce — but their relationship inspired much of Swift’s most recent album. When The Tortured Poets Department dropped in April, listeners were surprised by the focus on Healy instead of Alwyn, 33, on songs like “The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived,” “Fresh Out the Slammer” and the album’s title track.

Matty Healy Is ‘Uncomfortable’ With Focus on Taylor Swift Romance

Healy acknowledged in Tuesday’s interview that he “became a way more well-known public figure for loads of different reasons,” but he doesn’t anticipate going on a huge promotional tour whenever the band’s next record is ready.

“I used to write about relationships a lot more and stuff like that,” he continued. “Maybe I’d be inclined to kind of reflect on my experience as a person, do you know what I mean? And more as an artist, but honestly, I would kind of just be lying.”

He explained, “You know, if I made a record about all the stuff that was said about me or my casual romantic liaisons or whatever it may be that I’ve kind of become known for just because I was famous, I think that’s an obvious thing to draw from. I’m just not interested in it. … The idea of making a record about something that personally happened to me that, by the time I put it out, is gonna be, like, two years old — I see people doing that, as well, and it’s just not interesting.”

Matty Healy Speaks About ‘Special Love’ in Resurfaced Video After ‘TTPD’

Healy declared that he would rather create “interesting art pop” about “subjects that I’m really interested in,” leaving his personal life largely off the table.

“I’m sure there’ll be some kind of love songs on there. I think that yeah, I’m not in the world of, ‘Did you see what happened? Here’s my version of it,’ kind of thing,” he explained. “I think that’s for other artists to do.”

While Swift hasn’t publicly addressed her split from Healy apart from in her music, the British rocker was pressed for his thoughts on TTPD shortly after its release.

“How would you rate your Taylor diss track compared to the 30 others?” a reporter asked in April, per Entertainment Tonight, to which Healy replied, “I haven’t really listened to that much of it, but I’m sure it’s good.”
