LEWISTON — Nearly 100 years ago, a local social club purchased the old brick building on 31 Maple Street, then an automotive garage, and turned its ground floor into a stylish movie house. The Ritz Theater, as it was named, quickly became a venue that drew countless moviegoers of all ages, including a young Stephen King.

A century later, the building, now known as The Public Theatre, is still offering inspiring entertainment to those who gather there. The non-profit organization engages and enriches community members and visitors through live productions, educational programs, and artistic excellence, helping participants and audiences see the world in new ways.

The Public Theatre has brought the spirit of Hollywood and Broadway to the old Ritz since 1992, and thanks to a partnership with Actor’s Equity Association, the theatre is able to showcase some of the country’s best actors in its productions.

It’s a remarkable success story that brings joy and cultural connections to over 15,000 audience members each year, and one that Norway Savings Bank has been proud to support for decades, including a $2,500 contribution this month and over $30,000 in the last decade.

“The Public Theatre is a beloved institution, not just in Lewiston, but across the state and region,” said Dan Walsh, president and CEO of Norway Savings. “I’m always amazed at how they manage to incorporate youth programming throughout the year as well as summer theatre camps to help build a connection to the arts in our young people. That education is invaluable and certainly worth supporting and celebrating.”

Through workshops, student matinees, and writing projects, The Public Theatre helps local students express their creativity and find their voice in addition to launching and presenting memorable productions, including upcoming shows that have already been announced: “Dracula: A Comedy of Terrors” (Oct. 11-27), “A Christmas Carol” (Dec. 10-12), “Every Brilliant Thing” (Jan. 24 to Feb. 2), “Halfway There” (March 14-23), and “Now and Then” (May 2-11). More special events will be added in the coming months.

The former auto shop has steadily grown into a driving force in the world of performing arts.

“The Public Theatre is revered by performers and crowds alike and we’re honored to help preserve this cultural institution and historic building,” said Walsh.
