QUOTE OF THE DAY

“I want to make everyone that’s supported me proud, and maximize what I have out of my body. So many people would kill to be in my position.”

— Clara Brown, a Falmouth-born cyclist, who won a bronze medal at the 2024 Paralympic Games in Paris.

TODAY’S TOP MAINE STORIES

A man who was shot on a Bangor road Tuesday night was walking back to his hotel after dinner, prosecutors said. New details of the shooting came out during the alleged shooter’s first court appearance Wednesday.

Finding jobs is no longer the biggest barrier to helping refugees settle in Bangor and Maine. Employers now approach Catholic Charities Maine, but the lack of housing is creating a new challenge for the nonprofit looking to settle for 150 refugees in Bangor over the next year.

A New Camden restaurant will serve a rotating menu of small plates. The eatery, called Winona’s, will accommodate just six parties at a time and only serve dinner by reservation.

Republican Austin Theriault is leading U.S. Rep. Jared Golden in the first public poll of their 2nd District race. The survey shows a poor electoral environment for the Democratic incumbent, despite Golden winning in 2018 and 2020, when former President Donald Trump carried the district.

The same poll found Mainers split on whether to replace the state flag. Voters will decide in November if Maine will change its flag to something similar to the original pine tree design.

THINGS TO DO THIS WEEKEND

Beyond this weekend’s Common Ground Country Fair in Unity, there’s lots more to do around eastern Maine. Penobscot Theatre Co. opens its 2024-2025 season with the comedic play “Birthday Candles,” which runs through Oct. 6 at the Bangor Opera House. On Saturday, take your mermaid-obsessed kids to the Grand Theatre in Ellsworth for a 7 p.m. singalong to the classic Disney movie “The Little Mermaid.” On Sunday, the Bangor Symphony Orchestra opens its season at 3 p.m. at the Collins Center for the Arts Orono, and there’s the final Bangor Waterfront Night Market of the season, set for 4 to 9 p.m. along Bangor’s Penobscot River waterfront.

FROM THE OPINION PAGES

“The danger of the spread of mosquito-borne illnesses is real and state and local officials are wise to consider ways to plan and react before the risk becomes even worse.”

Editorial: Mosquito public health emergency is about caution and preparation

LIFE IN MAINE

Wondering why your Maine garden didn’t go as you expected this year? Plants are complicated, but there are several common reasons why they don’t produce or ripen.

Perhaps one of the most celebrated parts of the Common Ground Country Fair is the poster design. With more than 40 years of designs, the images capture the beauty of rural life in Maine.

The fall foliage is just starting to peek out in northern Maine, so don’t miss the opportunity to plan a leaf-peeping road trip. Peak foliage season typically runs from mid-September through October.
