BANGOR – Northern Light Acadia Hospital has been ranked No. 2 in the country among psychiatric hospitals for the lowest readmission rate. In layman’s terms, the ranking is an indication that Acadia Hospital is providing high quality clinical services across the spectrum of behavioral healthcare, and that people are not returning to emergency departments for crisis treatment, thereby putting their lives on hold.

Becker’s Behavioral Health compiled a list of the psychiatric facilities across the nation with the highest and lowest readmission rates after an inpatient psychiatric stay using Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services’ Inpatient Psychiatric Facility Quality Measure Data – by Facility. Only Saint John Hospital in Leavenworth, Kansas ranked ahead of Acadia for lowest readmission rate. For readmissions, CMS calculates the rate of patients readmitted to any hospital within 30 days of discharge from an inpatient psychiatric facility.

“This ranking by Becker’s Behavioral Health means that more inpatient beds are available for people who are experiencing an acute crisis or declining mental health because those beds are not occupied by prior months’ patients whose illnesses were not adequately treated or whose discharge plans failed,” says John Campbell, MD, FANPA, vice president and senior physician executive, Northern Light Acadia Hospital. “This ranking has required a total team effort, and I couldn’t be prouder of the quality-of-care Acadia employees provide to our communities.”

Becker’s Healthcare is a multimedia organization that creates connections between healthcare leaders and shares essential information for hospitals and healthcare agencies to thrive. Becker’s Behavioral Health arms behavioral health leaders with industry news and analysis to make informed decisions about clinical care.
