A gull has been put to sleep after an alleged attack in Swansea left it with a broken wing.

The bird was allegedly thrown and kicked near Castle Square in the city centre on 24 August at around 6pm.

The RSPCA is appealing for witnesses and information about the alleged incident.

The gull was allegedly grabbed by its wing before it was thrown and looked to have a broken wing after the incident, the charity says.

It was initially taken for examination but had to be put down “due to the severity of its injuries”.

RSPCA Inspector Keith Hogben described the alleged incident as “upsetting”.

“[It] would have been a very distressing incident to witness,” he added.

“We are looking for anyone with first-hand information which could help our enquiries to give us a call on our appeals line.”

The RSPCA has thanked everyone who helped the gull and contacted it about the incident.

“Sadly, many people have an unfavourable opinion of gulls – but these are intelligent animals who form strong social bonds with each other, and deserve to be treated with respect,” Inspector Hogben added.
