QUOTE OF THE DAY

“This was one of the largest embezzlement cases in the history of the State of Maine, certainly the largest in Piscataquis County.”

— Piscataquis County prosecutor R. Christopher Almy after a Guilford woman was found guilty on Thursday of stealing more than $700,000 from a Medford company.

TODAY’S TOP MAINE STORIES

Kamala Harris leads Donald Trump in the first Maine poll since Joe Biden exited the race. The results came out the same day Maine’s 2nd District Democratic Rep. Jared Golden voted with Republicans to criticize Harris on her work on immigration.

A new bar with craft cocktails is opening in downtown Bangor. Pop art hangs on the black walls with gold accents around the bar. The goal was to create a speakeasy-type aesthetic, co-owner Tan Tai said.

Businesses that need industrial space are leaving Maine because they can’t find it. In Portland, where demand is greatest, just 131,000 of a possible 19 million square feet of industrial space is available.

Two people died in a fiery plane crash at a Hancock County airport. The plane had taken off from Morristown Municipal Airport in New Jersey and was making its final approach when it crashed.

THINGS TO DO THIS WEEKEND

It’s a packed, eclectic weekend at the Maine Savings Amphitheater in Bangor, with rock band Godsmack on Friday night, comedy group the Impractical Jokers on Saturday and Kidz Bop on Sunday. It’s also the start of the Bangor State Fair, with the first of two weekends of rides, food, music and more running through Sunday.

There’s also ample fun activities for families all around eastern Maine. On Saturday, the Maine Artisan Bread Fair is set for Skowhegan, so carb-lovers, this is your weekend. On both Saturday and Sunday, Fort Knox State Historic Site in Prospect hosts a Wizarding Weekend, inspired by the Harry Potter books and included with park admission. And Sunday, it’s Open Farm Day across the state, when farms open their doors to the public to see all the good things happening in agriculture in Maine.

FROM THE OPINION PAGES

“The cost savings compared with gas were eye-opening. While lounging at our hotel, we charged our car with a Level 2 charger. That charging session provided 100 miles of range and set us back a mere $1.96.”

Opinion: Our New England road trip sold us on electric vehicles

LIFE IN MAINE

In a new poll, the UMaine Black Bears have been picked to finish 13th again in the Coastal Athletic Association standings. But head coach Jordan Stevens isn’t concerned about the unsettling results, calling them “irrelevant.”

Don’t wait until hunting season to practice shooting. Hunters need to make a special effort to head to the range this summer because the skill diminishes with time, BDN Outdoors contributor Bill Graves writes.

“Before I acquired the wisdom of age and experience, I looked at the ocean the way most people do — as a flat, uniform expanse of water,” birder Bob Duchesne writes. Today he sees the Gulf of Maine as a saltwater Serengeti.
