SEARS ISLAND — Friends of Sears Island will host a guided hike of the “greatest hits” around the island on Tuesday, July 2 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., led by Maine Master Naturalist and FOSI advisory group member Cloe Chunn. The hike will take in some of the island’s most spectacular sites while traversing through a variety of ecosystems.
Chunnwill first lead the group along the western shore of the island so that participants can see where the proposed offshore wind manufacturing facility would be sited, and what shoreline and inland habitat stands to be lost. We’ll explore some of the island’s most beautiful sections of trails, as well as the southern shore and tide pools, the eastern ledges, the old foundations of the Sears family’s summer home and the farmhouse on the Homestead Trail, and the milkweed field, where we may spot some butterflies. Chunn will be sharing about the natural history of the island throughout the walk.
The hike will be approximately 5-6 miles, covering a variety of terrain, from rocky shoreline to trails with exposed roots and bog bridging. Participants should bring a bag lunch, plenty of water, sun protection, and take precautions against ticks. Swimming will also be an option for those that are interested.
