BLUE HILL — Hancock County Habitat for Humanity joins our sponsors, donors, supporters, volunteers and our partner Sonia in celebrating the ground breaking and blessing of the site of our latest home, located off rt 15 on Pine Ridge Lane in Blue Hill.

“This simple, energy efficient home has been designed to meet Sonia’s housing needs now and into the future” says Sherry Billings, executive director with Habitat. “We had planned this home to be built last year but infrastructure issues delayed us. We are so excited to work alongside Sonia to build her home, the 21st for our local affiliate!”

The land the home will sit on is part of a 5-acre parcel donated by Benny and Anne Wall for the development of affordable housing.

We invite you to join us at the site on Saturday, June 15 at 10 a.m.

  • Meet Sonia and hear her story of becoming a Habitat homeowner.
  • Meet Habitat staff, board members and key volunteers.
  • Enjoy light refreshments, listen to the birds, mingle with the community and help us bless this land, the homes that it will hold and the people who will inhabit them.

Since 1989 HCHH has been building and repairing a place for people to call home here in Hancock County. We partner with economically disadvantaged people to help them realize the dream of home ownership and the benefit of stable housing. Through use of donated land, materials and labor, we create an affordable product that is built, in part, by those who will live in it. We require 200 hours of sweat equity from each adult in the home prior to taking ownership and rely on community volunteers to defray the cost of labor. We currently receive no government funding and gratefully receive charitable donations from individuals and corporations to help us with our mission to ensure that everyone has a decent place to live.

Driven by the vision that everyone needs a decent place to live, Habitat for Humanity began in 1976 as a grassroots effort on a community farm in southern Georgia. The Christian housing organization has since grown to become a leading global nonprofit working in local communities across all 50 states in the U.S. and in more than 70 countries. Families and individuals in need of a hand up partner with Habitat for Humanity to build or improve a place they can call home. Habitat homeowners help build their own homes alongside volunteers and pay an affordable mortgage. Through financial support, volunteering or adding a voice to support affordable housing, everyone can help families achieve the strength, stability and self-reliance they need to build better lives for themselves. Through shelter, we empower. To learn more, visit habitat.org.
