The Bangor Babes had Saturday’s doubleheader against Augusta rained out but the first-year Greater Northeast College Baseball League team has a busy week in store.

The Babes, who opened their campaign with  4-3 and 2-1 victories over the Old Orchard Beach Bugs two weekends ago, will travel to Biddeford for a Tuesday doubleheader against the Sebago Slammin’ Salmon beginning at 4:30 p.m.

They will then return to play their home opener at 6 p.m. on Wednesday at the Dr. John Winkin Sports Complex at Husson University in Bangor against the Gorham Lightning.

They will entertain the Augusta Surgin’ Sturgeon at 6 p.m. on Friday before a six-day break.

Head coach Trevor DeLaite is adding two pitchers to his roster from the state of Maine in Windham High’s Brady Harvie and Greely of Cumberland Center’s Sam Almy.

Both are high school seniors.

Harvie will be available to pitch on Tuesday since his Windham team has been eliminated from the Class A South playoffs but Almy and his Greely team are playing Yarmouth in the Class B South championship game on Tuesday.

DeLaite added two pitchers from NCAA Division III Hendrix College in Arkansas a few days before the Old Orchard Beach doubleheader in Kyle Poissot and Johnny Miles and both figured in the wins.

Poissot, who is from Magnolia, Texas, picked up the win with three scoreless relief innings in the 2-1 game and Miles earned the save. Miles is from Lee’s Summit, Mo.

DeLaite said the hitting coach/infield coach at Hendrix is Matt Marsh, who was a volunteer assistant coach at the University of Maine when he was pitching for the Black Bears.

“They throw strikes, their stuff is good and they want to get better,” said DeLaite. That’s huge.”

DeLaite said he has plenty of position players but would still like to add three or four more pitchers and is recruiting them.

He will try to give all of his players some valuable playing time and said the league allows EHs, which stands for extra hitters.

Each team can have one extra hitter in their lineup in addition to the designated hitter and the starting positional players.

“Having the EH in summer ball is great,” DeLaite said. “It gives an extra player three or more at-bats each game.”

The former Bangor High, University of Maine and Liberty University standout pitcher said he is enjoying his team.

“They’re great guys and they’re starting to blend together,” he said. “It’s fun seeing people who didn’t know each other at one time now having a good time and working out together.”

He is looking forward to the home opener.

“Hopefully, we’ll get some people out there to watch them play,” said DeLaite.
