A manhunt is under way for a prisoner who absconded from an open jail in North Yorkshire.

Daniel Gee, 44, went missing from Kirklevington Grange prison on 27 May, Cleveland Police said.

He is described as a “white male, large build, around 6ft tall and bald”.

Gee was last seen wearing a black jumper, black Adidas bottoms with a white stripe down each leg and black trainers.

He was carrying a yellow JD Sports bag.

Cleveland Police said Gee is believed to have links to the North Yorkshire area including Whitby, Carlisle, St Helens and Merseyside.

In an appeal to the public, police urged anyone who may have seen Gee or knows of his current whereabouts to contact them.

Police did not state why Gee was in the Category D jail.

Category D jails are also known as open prisons, the gov.uk website says.

They have minimal security and allow eligible prisoners to spend most of their day away from the prison on licence to carry out work, education or for other resettlement purposes.

Open prisons only house individuals who have been risk-assessed and deemed suitable for open conditions.
