The Social Security Administration announced this week the most popular baby names of 2023, along with state by state breakdowns of the most popular names.
For Maine, the top five most popular baby names for girls, in order, were Charlotte, Evelyn, Olivia, Eleanor and Harper.
For Maine boys, the top five most popular were, in order, Theodore, Oliver, Henry, Hudson and Owen.
Last year, the most popular name for a girl in Maine was Evelyn, and for boys, it was Oliver. The second most popular last year, Charlotte and Theodore, swapped places for this year.
Nationally, the top five most popular boys names for 2023 were Liam, Noah, Oliver, James and Elijah. For girls, it was Olivia, Emma, Charlotte, Amelia and Sophia.
The full list of the top 100 baby names for Maine can be found on the Social Security website, as can the top 100 for the whole country. It has some surprises compared to the national top 100 list, including several names in Maine that do not appear on the national top 100 list, like Evangeline, Wren and Margot for girls and Jasper, Vincent and Arthur for boys.
